Up to 1/4 people of all ages may have some form of environmental allergies, often with symptoms of congestion, itchy eyes, ears, and nose, and sneezing. Many of these people can manage their condition with over the counter medicines, prescription medicines from their primary care providers (if needed), and environmental avoidance strategies.
When medicines are not enough or unwanted side effects occur (especially fatigue with OTC medicines and nose bleeds with nasal sprays), symptoms persist all year long, and secondary conditions associated with allergies start to develop, such as asthma, recurrent sinus disease, recurrent bronchial infections, recurrent ear infections, chronic headaches, recurrent itchy rashes, persistent fatigue with difficulty concentrating, food allergies, or obstructive sleep apnea, it’s time to see an allergy specialist.
With allergy skin testing and/or blood testing, we can discover hidden triggers, confirm suspected triggers, and then provide additional treatments, including immunotherapy (Allergy shots) if indicated.
Bring your expired Epi-Pen into our office and we can dispose of it for you. We can also practice on a demonstrator if you need a refresher on how to use it.
Coconut is not a botanical nut. It is actually classified as a fruit even though the Food and Drug Administration recognizes coconut as a tree nut. While allergic reactions to coconut have been documented, most people who are allergic to tree nuts can safely eat coconut. Talk to your allergist before adding coconut to your diet. Nutmeg is a spice that is derived from seeds, not nuts. It may be safely eaten by people with tree nut allergies.
